A youth outdoor education program where the ocean is our classroom

1 or 2 weeks of day-long adventures where we play in the water, learn about sea creatures and how to protect Mama Ocean during school year breaks and summer. For K-5th graders!

Campers will develop confidence by the sea through exploration, play, hands-on learning, conservation focused activities, and fun games.

Why kids need to play outside

(From Harvard Health Publishing)

  1. Sunshine - Get some Vitamin D

  2. Exercise

  3. Take risks

  4. Socialization

  5. Appreciation of nature

  6. Executive Function - “These are the skills that help us plan, prioritize, troubleshoot, negotiate, and multitask”

Sea Hugger’s Education Philosophy

Sea Hugger embodies the movement to incorporate outdoor education into the general education system. We believe it is crucial for humans to learn to respect and care for our planet at a young age, to ensure a lifetime of appreciation and good stewardship of our home. Campers will develop confidence by the sea through exploration, play, hands-on learning, conservation-focused activities, and fun games.

We loved having her outside, getting sandy, and using her imagination.

Testimonials

“She says the ocean makes her feel calm and it reminds her of nature. She has spent more time at the beach this summer than she ever has before! We loved that she spent so much time outside at the beach everyday. She got to meet new kids from other schools and had a lot of fun.”
-Camper Parent

“He told me about an activity they did and I didn’t realize how much plastic was out there. I’m always sad to see the trash, but am glad he helps clean it up. He is being more mindful of our plastic use.”
- Camper Parent

“I think she has more confidence now when it comes to playing in the ocean. Emotionally, I think it’s been a great break from months at home. She has definitely learned more about protecting the ocean from litter, and I think she learned more about the coastal environment (plants/animals).”

DETAILS

Covid-19 Safety:

We follow San Mateo County guidelines and all of our teachers/assistants are vaccinated. Due to the variant nature of these guidelines, please email warrior@seahugger.org for questions.

Summer Camp session breakdowns

1 week: This group will be larger (12-20 kids). We will have 2-3 volunteers along with the head instructor, Sophie Pigman.

2 weeks: We will have a lead instructor, and our SEL teacher lead these sessions. This will be a smaller group (6-8 kids). Kids will get more one-on-one attention and more support when going on excursions. Plus we have "off-camp" excursions.

Conservation Activity example:

Today we are inspiring Sea Huggers to protect our oceans with an oil spill activity!
We will simulate our own oil spill and teach the kiddos the impacts humans have on the oceans and how we can help keep them safe.

What to bring:

Clothing layers

Lunch/snack (please bring an allergy-friendly snack, we will not be sharing snacks between campers due to food sensitivities.)

Sturdy shoes

Reusable water bottle (no single-use plastic water bottles please!)

Change of clothes and a towel

A good attitude and love for Mama Ocean!
