Cigarette Butt Receptacles

Sea Hugger’s cigarette butt receptacles around Half Moon Bay harbor upcycled by Terracycle.

#1 marine contaminant

Cigarettes are the number one marine contaminant and we pick them up by the bucket at our beach cleanups. Butts are made of Cellulose Acetate Fiber (a form of plastic), are toxic, and much too often end up on the ground and in our oceans. We’ve partnered with Keep America Beautiful and TerraCycle to install cigarette receptacles at businesses around the harbor in Half Moon Bay, CA. These bins help decrease the amount of butts we see on the streets or in landfill.

Join our efforts!

We empty our receptacles and send the butts to TerraCycle where they will be recycled into industrial pallets. We are looking for sponsors to help us grow our impact and volunteers to help maintain these bins!
