First Flush

  • Half Moon Bay, CA USA (map)

Sea Hugger is excited to support the San Mateo RCD in this year’s First Flush, a community science event to protect our waterways! When the first big rain arrives, pollutants are washed into storm drains and oceans. We’re looking for volunteers to join us as ‘scientists for the day,’ collecting water samples at sites from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay. Help us ensure cleaner creeks, beaches, and oceans by testing for harmful pollutants.

Spread the word! First Flush is open to all—join us for a meaningful adventure during the first rain of the season!

Thank you so much to those that attended the Virtual Training for First Flush! Here is the recording of the training for those that had scheduling conflicts. In the training we talked about the RCD, the history of First Flush, the parameters that we’re testing for, and the sampling procedures. After watching the training, please fill out the Team Selection Form with your team preferences and availability so that we can assign you to your team! Once everyone has filled out this form I will email you your team assignments and site directions. In the presentation, Clifton shared this link to an interactive county watershed map if you want to learn more about the watersheds in San Mateo County!

This recording is part one of the training and there will be an in-person sampling training this Saturday, the 21st, at 10:30 am at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. For those that can’t attend at that time we will send out an instructional video containing that information.

Later Event: September 21
