HUGGEMON WEEK 2

Activity

STEPS:

  1. Fill a large bowl with water.

  2. Use blue food coloring to dye water blue.

  3. Gather a few animals or small boats that can get wet to place in the water.

  4. Prep Q: Ask your kids what they think happens when an oil tanker or a boat crashes. Explain that oil will spill from the boat/tanker.

  5. "Spill" oil using household olive oil in the water (about 2-3 Tbs).

  6. Observe what the spill looks like, how the animals feel once wet with oil, etc. You can also have your kids dip a feather in the water to see what happens. (Kids will see that animals/feathers become slimy. Explain how this makes it hard for birds to fly and also hurts other marine life.)

  7. Now ask you kids what they think will clean the spill.

  8. Collect the materials they think will work (sponge, scoop, paper towel etc.).

  9. Try all solutions and see what works and does not work to clean up oil spills.

  10. Tie it all together: talk about how this happens in the ocean and how it is very difficult to clean and affects the marine life.

  11. Take a picture and send to Sea Hugger. Good job Sea Huggers!
