ocean-friendly gift guide:

We’ve got ya covered from selecting a gift to wrapping it with Mama Ocean in mind!

Let’s start with selecting your gift(s)

  1. shop small & support local

This reduces greenhouse gas emissions from air or long-distance travel AND puts money into your local economy.

  2. do a little digging (vet the business!)

A simple Google search or even looking the business up through the Better Business Bureau or sites like Good On You can do wonders. If you want to dive further, look for legitimate certifications like Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Soil Association, Plastic Neutral, etc.

Another simple way to see if your gift is ocean-friendly is to look at the materials. All natural materials and dyes are best (think 100% organic cotton, soy based inks, stainless steel, bamboo, etc.)

  3. Consider a plant

Plants make a great gift for those close to you (being mindful of allergies!). It’s a way to bring nature inside and freshen up their home. Plus, you can even do it for free with a small cutting and cup of water!

  4. Experiences are everything

Think cooking classes, throwing classes, or foraging classes for the recipient ready to expand their skill set. Or a spa/mindful experience for the recipient who puts everyone else first. Do they have a trip coming up in the new year? Contribute to their trip fund, letting them know the contribution is meant for a special outing!

  5. Contribute in their honor

Whether the donation is in their name or in memory of their loved one, supporting a future of healthy oceans is sure to make positive waves for all involved. Donations to our organization are tax-deductible, too. Everyone wins, especially Mama Ocean!

Now, wrapping your gift!

  1. choose to reuse

We’ve seen gifts wrapped inside other gifts (the famous teapot in The Office), in newspaper, saved gift bags, old scarves, baby blankets, the list goes on! Get creative and have some fun.

  2. Opt for glitter & foil-free

Still favoring traditional gift wrap? No problem! Just stick to FSC certified wrapping paper free from glitter (hello microplastics) and foil. Once your gift has been opened, the wrapping paper will be able to be recycled!

  3. Accent with natural items

Twine, dried citrus, sprigs from nature, and hand made gift tags are great options for beautifying any gift. Please be mindful of how you harvest any natural elements, ensuring Nature is as undisturbed as possible.

Happy gift giving!
